Lewis English School

LOVE • EQUALITY • SERVICE

Lewis English School (LES) was the brainchild of Mrs. and Mr. Leonard Subba. The couple established the school in the year 1975 in Mirik, Darjeeling District, India and began teaching a handful of students from the then "Gurung Saheb Ko Kothi" (Gurung Saheb's cottage), which is also the present LES premises.

Mirik was a small town back then. Parents had no option but to send their wards to government schools where the medium of instruction was Nepali. Sending their wards to missionary schools in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong was not an option for the majority of our parents whose earnings could not meet their children's outstation education. With the opening of LES, everything changed. Sir Leonard and Madam Elizabeth came as a harbinger of hope. The local parents took pride in telling friends and families that their wards were being educated in an "English" school.

The school has make gaint leaps in the past 40 years with more than 25 batches of students passing out from the school after writing their ICSE exams.
